Roman silver Legionary applique showing the frontal bust of Athena, wearing a Greek helmet. Flat backed reverse with a mounting pin.

Condition: good and solid condition. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request.
-> In Roman mythology, Athena is known as Minerva. She is the goddess of wisdom, warfare (particularly strategic and defensive aspects), crafts, and the arts. Roman soldiers, or legionaries, relied heavily on discipline, strategy, and skill—traits that are under the auspices of Minerva.
Around 82 AD, Emperor Domitian founded the First Legion Minervia, the full name seems to have been I Flavia Minervia: Flavia being the family name of Domitian, and Minerva being his favourite deity.
Material:
This object has been carefully examined for its material and surface characteristics.
Laboratory analysis (e.g. XRF) is not routinely undertaken in private collecting, and destructive testing is avoided as it causes permanent damage to archaeological material.
Before modern hallmarking, gold and silver alloys varied depending on local resources, recycling practices and economic conditions.
