Antoine Mortier (1908–1999) was a Belgian artist who is regarded as one of the leading representatives of postwar abstract painting. As a member of the group Young Belgian Painting, he was the artist who most closely aligned with Flemish Expressionism, which rightly allows him to be considered an abstract expressionist. Although Belgian painting only relatively late encountered groundbreaking American movements such as action painting and colour field painting, Mortier’s work shows a similar sensibility. His paintings show kinship with the work of Franz Kline, especially through the powerful calligraphic character of his brushwork. Mortier’s oeuvre is characterized by a sturdy, vividly animated formal language in which elemental physical force takes center stage.
Viewing is naturally possible. In addition, we have our own in-house picture-framing shop, which is celebrating its 85th anniversary year.
