Welo opal is found in silica veins just 2-3 m below the surface. What makes its mining so difficult are the methods used. Only the inhabitants of this region are allowed to mine these deposits. As the populations are rural, they employ archaic and sometimes dangerous methods to extract the stones. Since January 2011, a new mining site has emerged with stricter standards, bringing together 500 professional miners. The Ethiopian government regulates and monitors this wealth by not allowing buyers to go to the mining sites to deal directly with the miners. The opal market lies outside the mining region.

L’Opale Welo se trouve dans des veines de silice à seulement 2-3m de la surface. Ce qui rend son exploitation si difficile, ce sont les moyens mis en œuvre. Seuls les habitants de cette région sont autorisés à exploiter ces gisements. Les populations étant rurales, elles utilisent des méthodes archaïques et parfois dangereuses pour extraire les pierres. Depuis janvier 2011, un nouveau site d’exploitation a vu le jour avec des normes plus strictes et regroupant 500 mineurs professionnels. Le gouvernement éthiopien régule et surveille cette richesse en n’autorisant pas les acheteurs à se rendre sur les lieux d’exploitation pour traiter directement avec les mineurs. Le marché des Opales se trouve à l’extérieur de la région de minage.
