Peridot, also called chrysolite, is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The light-green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.

Peridot is the magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite) with a composition approaching Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.

Peridot is of a light-green color with a range from yellow-green to olive green. There are also brownish varieties known. Peridot is sometimes confused with emerald and other green gemstones, including chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite as well as garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (chromolith, verdelith).

Peridot is already mentioned in the Old Testament (as pitdah), and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as an “evening emerald” because it lights up easily under lamp light. In the Middle Ages, peridot was often part of church decorations; presumably peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders. The stone was attributed healing powers, as well as the power to dispel evil spirits.
