Description from the seller
Title:
Sculptural group in polychrome wood – Baptism of Christ – Italy, late 18th / early 19th century
Description:
Interesting devotional sculpture group in carved and polychromed wood depicting the Baptism of Christ, with St. John the Baptist pouring water over Jesus' head.
The composition, articulated across several figures, presents an effective narrative rendering and a good balance between movement and stillness: Christ standing, with soft and natural drapery, and St. John the Baptist kneeling in a devout pose. The lamb is also present, a Christian symbol.
The workmanship can be traced to an Italian production of a popular milieu between the late 18th and early 19th century, with characteristics still tied to Baroque taste in gesture and drapery, but already simplified according to a later sensibility.
Diffuse traces of the original polychromy are still visible, with pale and natural hues contributing to the work's charm.
State of conservation:
Overall decent condition, with evident signs of time:
- wear and losses of polychromy
- widespread abrasions
- small losses and imperfections
- possible repaintings at the base
- normal signs of age and use
Overall, the work maintains good structural integrity and a remarkable decorative impact.
Era: late 18th – early 19th century
Provenance: Italy
Material: carved and polychromed wood
Dimensions: [to be inserted]
Notes:
Sacred art group of particular interest for collectors and enthusiasts, ideal for antique environments or decorative arrangements.
