Christian Paleochristian Lamp, 4th – 5th centuries A.D.
Historical period: 4th–5th centuries A.D.
Origin: North Africa.
Material: Terracotta.
Dimensions: 121 x 62 mm.
Lamp with an oval or pear-shaped body, circular aperture, central cavity slightly sunken with a central filling hole. Contour decorated with incised vegetal motifs. Solid tongue-like handle without perforation on the back. These oval/pear-shaped lamps are referred to by some authors as the “slipper” type.
Conservation status: good, no restorations. Small chips and scratches, wear on some fine details, inlays and sediment deposits on the surface and inside cavity.
Material and origin: These lamps were generally made of terracotta (fired clay) using molds for standardized production. This particular style was widely produced in Roman North Africa and exported throughout the Mediterranean.
Provenance: A. Gallery specialized in ancient art, 2002. Earlier, Ex. Private collection, Netherlands, acquired between the 1960s and 1970s S. Mejns.
This lamp belongs to a larger lot of 10 lamps from different historical periods. A copy of the gallery’s authenticity certificate is sent with the object, as well as a catalog if the item was included in it.
