Description from the seller
An exceptionally signed copy on the frontispiece page by Marc Garanger (1935 - 2020), unique and unavailable as a signed copy. 224 pages and 150 color photographs printed full page or double page with captions and date of capture, preface by Frédéric Mitterand and postface by Marie-José Mondzain. Solid publisher’s black hardcover binding, with the title debossed on the spine in a tone-on-tone manner and a dust jacket illustrated on the cover. Excellent condition, like new.
When Marc Garanger chose to cross the Iron Curtain and enter the USSR, in 1967, the world was living through the great hours of the Cold War. For the West, the Russian empire seems a monolithic block, closed, unknown, terrifying. For Marc Garanger, it is a part of the earth that opens. With also its multiple borders and vast landscapes. He will thus try to share the history of a few hundred million men, their passions, their mysteries, who populate these lands.
Marc Garanger undertook numerous travels in Russia, as can be seen from the dates that accompany the photographs. The urban landscape interests him little in this book, and he photographs peasant markets, traditional popular festivities, the modest interiors of the taiga, the houses of the deep countryside. He takes a close interest in the phenomenon of shamanism, a system of beliefs and techniques of interaction between man and his tribe on the one hand, and the intermediate world of nature spirits on the other hand, very present in Siberia and which has been persecuted. He has also focused on visiting prisons and gathering testimony from innocent prisoners or victims of disproportionate sentences. He also photographs a demonstration of homeless people in Red Square in 1990 as well as ecological disasters of oil fields. Marc Garanger has always known how to foil the surveillance of the escorts charged with accompanying him, and his photographic testimony is of great freedom.
Book from my personal collection, in excellent condition (like new), kept with the greatest care. Very efficient protected shipping and international tracking guaranteed. In case of multiple purchases, possibility of grouped shipping with a refund of overpaid postage via Paypal.
