Description from the seller
The present icon is a high-quality Russian festive icon with a central depiction of the Resurrection of Christ and the Descent into Hades (Anastasis), surrounded by the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church year. The icon was executed in egg tempera on a chalk ground and gold ground on a two-part wooden panel.
The center of the icon shows the Anastasis, the Orthodox depiction of the Resurrection of Christ. Christ stands on the broken gates of Hades and draws Adam and Eve from their graves. The scene symbolizes Christ's victory over death and sin.
Around the central Easter scene are grouped the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church:
• Nativity of the Theotokos
• Presentation of Mary in the Temple
• Annunciation
• Nativity of Christ
• Presentation of Christ in the Temple
• Baptism of Christ
• Transfiguration of Christ
• Entry into Jerusalem
• Ascension of Christ
• Pentecost
• Dormition of the Theotokos
• Exaltation of the Cross
The arrangement corresponds to the classical structure of late 18th-century Russian festive icons.
The icon is characterized by exceptionally fine miniature painting. The figures are elegantly proportioned and executed with great care. The faces show differentiated modeling and a precision typical of high-quality workshop work.
The architectural settings are carefully structured and serve to clearly separate the individual feast scenes. The intense color palette of reds, pinks, ochre, and gold gives the icon an extraordinary radiance.
Particularly noteworthy is the high-quality gilding of the background and the fine execution of the Church Slavonic inscriptions.
Provenance is exceptionally well documented.
