Description from the seller

Bohemian crystal decanter engraved with wine motifs and a faceted stopper, ca. 1920

Elegant Bohemian crystal decanter with cranberry overlay technique (deep ruby red), decorated with engraved motifs of grape clusters and vine leaves. This piece corresponds to the characteristic style of Bohemian glassware from the early 20th century, a region worldwide renowned for its mastery in colored glass production. The classic pear-shaped form with a long, slender neck, crowned by a faceted teardrop-shaped stopper with diamond-cut facets, represents the refinement typical of these Central European manufactories.

The technique used consists of a cranberry crystal layer applied over colorless transparent crystal, subsequently engraved by copper wheel or hydrofluoric acid to reveal the elegant decorative motifs of vines, leaves, and grape clusters. The stopper features a high-quality, multifaceted cut with frosted cylindrical knurling. The base is smooth, transparent, and with a polished pontil. Dimensions: 36.5 cm total height with stopper and 13 cm maximum diameter.

The condition is good. Some air bubbles trapped in the neck are visible, characteristic of the hand-blown artisanal production of the era and not considered defects. The frosted stopper shows normal wear from use at its joining area. No cracks, significant chips, or restorations are evident. The decorative engravings are well defined and sharp.

Bohemian decanters with cranberry overlay are highly sought-after by antique glassware collectors. The combination of the intense ruby color with the engraved vinous motifs makes them objects that are both decorative and highly appealing functionally. This type of piece was widely exported from Bohemia to all of Europe and the Americas during the early decades of the 20th century, and today is valued as a representation of a centennial artisanal tradition.
