A single-block hardwood prestige stool from the Akan/Ashanti culture of Ghana, West Africa, dating to the mid‑20th century, with dimensions 39 cm (length) × 24 cm (width) × 23.5 cm (height), weight 3200 g, original authenticity, in good condition, featuring a natural fissure stabilized by a traditional repair.
Description from the seller
Description :
- A superb single-block traditional stool carved from a single block of hard wood, originating from West Africa, characteristic of the Ashanti people (Ghana) or Akan (Ivory Coast). This type of object, far more than a simple seat, carries a highly symbolic and spiritual dimension, often associated with the prestige of its owner.
- The curved seat, typical of African royal design, rests on a massive rectangular base. The central hollowed pedestal is beautifully adorned with complex geometric motifs (triangles, chevrons and incised lines) carved in relief on all four faces. The deep brown patina of wear testifies to the object's age and handling.
- As visible in photos 20260531_113721.jpg and 20260531_114028.jpg, the seat shows a natural desiccation crack running across the seat, which is quite classic for ancient monoxyle woods that have aged with time. An ancient indigenous repair made with resin or black wax is present at the end of this crack (visible in detail in photo 20260531_114028.jpg), which adds to the cultural authenticity and charm of the piece.
Object features :
- Type : Ethnic prestige stool
- Origin : West Africa (Akan / Ashanti culture)
- Material : Dense monoxyle wood
- Era : Mid-20th century (circa 1950-1960)
Condition : Good overall with signs of age, wear patina, and a desiccation crack stabilized by a traditional repair (see photos 20260531_113633.jpg and 20260531_113654.jpg for overall appearance).
