Description from the seller
Beautiful 6-person fish flatware service in 800 silver, dated between 1935 and 1944.
In excellent condition, consisting of 12 pieces for a total of 708 g.
The service comprises 12 pieces:
- 6 fish knives in 800 silver, height 21 cm, total weight 372 g
- 6 fish forks in 800 silver, height 18 cm, total weight 336 g
The entire service bears the hallmark "1 AL" paired with 800 silver, indicating the object is solid silver made by the historic Alessandria-based manufactory Cesa 1882, Italy's most famous silversmithing company.
The number 1 indicates that it was the very first factory mark registered in the province of Alessandria (AL).
1 AL: It is the identifying mark of the silversmith as established by Italian law.
Identifies the prestigious firm Cesa 1882 (official supplier to the Royal House of Savoy and the Quirinale).
The shape of the punch (Dating): The lozenge with the fasces is present (1935-1944):
The code 1 AL is found inside a lozenge with the fasces at the center, so the piece dates to the fascist period.
The presence of the fasces inside the lozenge together with the 1 AL mark places the production of the flatware set exactly in the fascist period, between 1935 and 1944.
This type of punch was introduced by Law no. 305 of February 5, 1934 to standardize silversmith marks across Italy.
This mark is a perfect temporal indicator for collectors of historical silver. The fasces was indeed abolished and removed by law on October 26, 1944 (Lictor Decree No. 313) just after the fall of the fascist regime. From the end of 1944, Cesa 1882 continued to use the same lozenge but left the central space empty.
