Description:
The Sony CF-950S is a relatively large portable world-band receiver with an integrated cassette recorder.
The substantial unit is equipped with protective handles on both sides of the front panel; the unit can be laid on its front for transport without damage.
The telescopic antenna is located vertically on the right side of the unit.
The device can be powered from 110/120 or 220/240 volt mains, which is recommended given the power consumption. Alternatively it can be powered by four UM-1 batteries.
Just below the band selector knobs, next to the built-in microphone, is the tuning knob for coarse tuning. In the shortwave bands this is used to directly tune the unit or, with the crystal calibrator activated, to the signal maximum of the calibrator at the corresponding 250 kHz marking; in the medium wave and FM bands this knob is used only for tuning.
The fine-tuning knob next to it is used for fine tuning in the shortwave bands: coarse tuning is used to tune to the calibrator signal at the nearest 250 kHz marking, fine tuning is used to tune to a frequency +/- 125 kHz above or below the calibration marking with a high accuracy of less than 5 kHz.
The RADIO/LINE IN switch acts as the main power switch; in the ON position the receiver is powered up. The bottom row of controls on the right contains, from left to right, the separate bass and treble controls and the volume control, on the far right the switches for BFO and AFC (on VHF) or the attenuator, which is active in the shortwave bands in the LOCAL position.
The mono cassette player is located on the left side of the front panel. Underneath the cassette compartment are the usual play, fast forward and rewind buttons, etc. The headphone jack is in the lower left corner. With the CREDIT IN switch you can add narration (spoken via the microphone) to an ongoing recording. The cassette is, as was customary at the time, equipped with a mechanical tape counter that allows locating a specific position on the cassette.
Today the CF-950S is an interesting, technically somewhat unusual collectible, although apart from the Sony ICF-SW1000T and the Sangean ATS-818CS, there are hardly any other shortwave receivers with an integrated cassette recorder.
