Set of three pieces designed by Vico Magistretti in Italy, in leather, in Mid-Century Modern style, comprising a 3-seat sofa (238 cm W x 95 cm D x 72 cm H) and two coordinating armchairs, dated 1990–2000 and in good used condition with minor signs of age and stains.
Description from the seller
This extraordinary Maralunga set, designed by Vico Magistretti in 1973 for Cassina, represents one of the pinnacles of contemporary Italian design: an icon of innovative comfort, essential elegance, and timeless versatility. The three‑seater sofa (width 238 cm) is the heart of the system, flanked by two coordinated armchairs that complete the modular composition, creating an enveloping and theatrical living space.
The soft sculptural silhouette is dominated by generous, thick cushions, with low, rounded arms inviting total relaxation. The true genius of Maralunga lies in the patented adjustable backrest mechanism: each back cushion opens and lifts thanks to an internal chain hidden in the foam, transforming the sofa from a relaxed position to a lounge with a high headrest – an innovation that in the ’73 revolutionized the concept of static seating, making it dynamic and customizable. The navy blue velvet upholstery gives the set a magnetic and sophisticated character: the fabric catches the light with velvety reflections, creating a nearly hypnotic effect under the loft’s industrial lighting. The dark blue, intense and mysterious, evokes nocturnal elegance, discreet luxury, and an atmosphere of a ’70s exclusive club.
The internal structure in steel and wood is completely hidden by the soft padding in expanded polyurethane and feather, which produces natural folds and enveloping comfort. The bases are minimal and discreet, with low feet that almost make the volumes hover above the floor.
