DESCRIPTION

Here's the English version.

DESCRIPTION
This is a Japanese "Tsuki-nomi" (突き鑿), a push chisel. While ordinary chisels ("Tataki-nomi") are struck with a mallet (genno), a tsuki-nomi is used differently — it is pushed forward by hand. Rather than chopping roughly, the blade is glided through the wood to shave thin layers, making it ideal for finishing work and fine adjustments.
For this reason, the tsuki-nomi is a tool for craftsmen who specialize in delicate, precise work. It has a longer blade and handle, and demands careful control and a high level of skill. Because it is not struck, many tsuki-nomi do not have the metal ring (katsura) on the end of the handle that striking chisels require. Used for finishing cuts, chamfering, and adjusting mortises, it plays a crucial role in the final stages that determine the precision of the work — which is why it is considered one of the more valuable types among Japanese chisels.
It is made with Japanese steel, the same kind known for use in katana and kitchen knives, and the blade stays sharp for a long time when properly maintained.
There are signs of wear, rust, and damage due to age and use. Please check the photos for details.
