Wooden Baoulé mask, Masque de réjouissance Kpan, from Bouaké, Côte d'Ivoire, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Ivory Coast
Baoulé
Wood
Height: 480mm
Width: 175mm
Depth: 120mm
African wooden mask from the Baoulé ethnic group of Ivory Coast.
Collected in Bouaké in the center of Ivory Coast.
This type of mask was used mainly for:
- Dances of rejoicing and public entertainments.
- Village feasts and community celebrations.
- Tributes to a person esteemed for their beauty, prestige, character, or dancing talents.
- Some ceremonies related to funerals or large social gatherings, but in a more honorific than funerary register.
Mblo masks were often "idealized portraits" of a real person. The dancer wearing the mask symbolically embodied that person and highlighted the qualities admired by Baoulé society: beauty, wisdom, dignity, self-control and respect.
Regarding the small female statuette at the top:
it generally evokes social rank, fertility, the continuity of the lineage, or an honored character; this type of crest is common on Baoulé prestige masks intended for festive performances.
This mask is representative of Baoulé art, with a balance between shapes and volumes and finely carved details.
Parcels are shipped from Monday to Saturday with insurance and tracking number.
Delivery in 1 to 3 days in France via Chronopost, 2 to 5 days across the European Union.
Delivery to the rest of Europe and worldwide via Colissimo International.
