Description from the seller
Artwork in good condition, sold without a frame. The frame nails are original. Riccardo Cessi (Dosolo, 1840 – Padua, February 27, 1913) was an Italian painter, active mainly in Veneto. After deepening his studies at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, at the end of the 1870s he moved to Rovigo, where he reached the peak of his career. He dedicated to Risorgimento themes several paintings presented at the Turin exhibition of 1862 (The Sentinel at the San Martino quarry) and in Milan in 1866 (Recreation in a military hospital in 1859). He later dealt with social themes (The Victims of Vice, shown in Milan in 1867) and gender themes, of which the present work is part. On commission he produced commemorative portraits.
He painted choirs and chapels in Rovigo, carrying out frescoes in the Poleesan capital, including in the church of San Michele and the church of Sant’Antonio Abate (better known in the city as San Domenico). He was also a portraitist, and among others he painted a portrait of Alessandro Manzoni, now belonging to the painter’s descendants. He nearly completed a watercolor illustration of the Divine Comedy. Another pen-on-paper portrait of Manzoni is at Liceo Manzoni in Milan. A pen portrait of Ludovico Ariosto is now at the Town Hall of Ferrara.
He taught drawing at the Rovigo women’s normal school. He founded a drawing school in Lendinara in 1868, and another in Polesella. He managed to gather a large group of followers and continued to paint many churches in the area.
From a private Milanese collection. Fast shipping with secure packaging and in compliance with disposal regulations in keeping with an eco-green spirit."
