Description from the seller
Staurotheke Icon of the Crucifixion of Christ with an artistically designed bronze cross
Authenticity certificate included
Bronze cross:
At the very top of the bronze cross one can discern the Mandylion, below it in Church Slavonic "the face not made by human hands". To the right and left of it are two angels with veiled hands bearing the inscriptions "Angel of the Lord" and "Tsar of the Honors".
On the long horizontal beam, left the sun, right the moon, which, according to the biblical depiction of the Crucifixion, darkened.
On the inner cross in the halo stands "Son of God", above it the abbreviation for "Jesos Christos".
To the right and left of Jesus one sees the spear and the staff with the vinegar-soaked sponge, with the inscription "the Cross triumphs".
The slanted beam shows the city of Jerusalem; the base of the cross bears the inscriptions "The Place of the Skull becomes Paradise" and "Golgotha".
Below the skull of Adam is visible, a reference to the field of Golgotha where Adam is said to be buried.
Painting:
To the left of the cross are the Mother of God, Martha and Mary Magdalene; to the right are John and the centurion Longinus in his splendid armor.
Border saints: on the left two Orthodox saints, on the right Mary of Egypt and another Orthodox saint.
Icon: wood, sunken central field, levkas, egg tempera
Cross: bronze cast with dark blue and light turquoise enamel inlay
Good preserved condition, color spots, both sponkis preserved, almost no bulging
Dating: Icon ~ 1800, the cross is even older
This icon is part of a large well-maintained private collection since the 1980s with over 70 pieces from Russia and Greece. All icons were professionally prepared (cleaned etc.) and documented in detail.
