Description from the seller
An antique carved oak drop-front desk or bureau, probably dating from the end of the 19th century or the early 20th century.
The piece of furniture is a secretaire desk, also commonly known as a bureau, with a hinged slanted front that drops down to create a writing surface.
Material and finish: The desk is made of dark finished oak, a commonly used material for this style and period.
Carving: The most striking are the intricate relief engravings on the panels of the two large drawers under the desk section, on the stiles (vertical supports) at the corners and along the lower edge. These floral- or scroll-like engravings are indicative of the Jacobean Revival style.
Legs: It stands on characteristic turned legs, consistent with Jacobean style.
Hardware: The drawers are equipped with round brass handles and keyhole escutcheons. The drop-front also has a central keyhole and brass hardware along the top edge.
Potential origin/period: The heavy carving and use of oak suggest English or French provincial origin, likely produced during a revival of earlier styles (Jacobean or Louis XVI Country French) in the late 1800s to early 1900s.
Dimensions: h. 90, w. 91 and d. 45 cm
In good condition with signs of wear
