Reliquary statue of Kota ethnicity from Gabon, dating to the late 20th century, made of wood with metal plates and bone eyes, sold with a stand, dimensions 710 mm height (plus 50 mm stand), 235 mm width, 100 mm depth, condition good.

Relief statue of an African reliquary figure from the Kota people of Gabon in wood covered with brass plates - The eyes are bone -
Damage due to wood-boring insects on the right side of the base, see detail photo and photos of the lower part of the reliquary.
The Kota people mainly live to the east of Gabon and to the west of Congo.
Many Kota reliquary figures exist. They share common features: a face made from metal sheets laid over a wooden core and a handle in the shape of a diamond.
The reliquary baskets or "bwété" were kept at the back of the chief’s hut. The "bwété" were venerated by offerings and prayers aimed at bringing prosperity to the clan. At the top of the "bwété" a reliquary statue was placed with a body strongly stylized in the shape of a diamond and a head covered in metal.
The parcels are sent from Monday to Saturday with insurance and tracking number. `
