Heavy industrial desk lamp with a cast iron foot, steel neck and aluminium shade, in the Art Deco style from around 1920, originating in North America, condition: in good used condition with minor signs of aging; maker unknown, original toggle switch by Gaynor Electric Company and rewired for safety.
Description from the seller
Heavy industrial desk lamp whose manufacturer is not entirely clear due to the lack of a clear company or factory name.
A clue may be the number '7002' (see photo 15) on the bottom of the base and the markings on the bakelite switch (see photo 13).
This number 7002 may be an American cataloging: this type four-digit numbering (often in the 7000- or 8000-range) is highly characteristic of American manufacturers of gooseneck lamps from that period, such as the well-known S.Robert Schwartz & Bro. or Faries Mfg. Co.
They produced loose cast iron components under specific catalog numbers, which were then assembled with flexible arms and shades into complete desk lamps.
The bakelite switch is a toggle switch (torpedo type) made by the Gaynor Electric Company (based in Bridgeport, Connecticut) and the inscription Und. lab. insp. stands for Underwriters Laboratories Inspection, which means the switch was approved at the factory by this American agency.
It may however also be that the base was produced by an independent foundry on behalf of a lamp maker and that its brand plate or felt has worn away over time.
What is clear is that the lamp consists of a cast-iron base, a steel neck, and an aluminum shade.
The stepped and streamlined design on the sides of the base show clear influences of the early Art Deco period, placing the lamp around 1920. This also fits with the bakelite switch.
The lamp has been fully cleaned without disturbing the aging and has been lightly beeswaxed.
The wiring has been renewed with suitably looking braided electrical cord with textile covering.
The original switch is used but the original bakelite plug has been replaced for safety reasons. This is included.
Maximum height is 57 cm, shade diameter is 27.5 cm, shade depth is 19 cm and the triangular base has sides of 22 cm.
Weight of the lamp is 2860 grams.
