Description from the seller
Female portrait
European School, second half of the 20th century
Signed and dated 1974
An interesting large-format female portrait depicting a young woman seated in an armchair, captured in a serene and contemplative pose. The composition centers attention on the figure, whose face and hands have been treated with particular sensitivity, conveying a marked psychological charge and an introspective presence characteristic of modern portraiture.
The artist structures the scene with a sober palette dominated by ochres, earth tones, and warm grays, contrasting with the lighter shades of the shirt and the background. The latter is organized in geometric planes and simplified surfaces that provide depth without diminishing the subject's prominence, reinforcing the contemporary character of the composition.
The brushwork, confident and visible, combines tonal modeling with strong contour lines that define the figure with personality—traits that place the work within European modern figuration of the second half of the 20th century, with clear echoes of the expressionist-influenced portrait tradition, where the artist's interest lies in the psychological presence of the model more than in academic detail.
The balance between chromatic sobriety, constructive composition, and the intensity of the portrait give the work a notable presence, further reinforced by its large format, which enhances the monumentality of the figure.
The work is signed and dated 1974 in the lower corner.
Dimensions: 81 × 100 cm.
The frame shows a distortion, a circumstance that would be concealed when the work is placed in a frame, a common practice for paintings of this format.
A piece of notable visual force and introspective character, representative of 20th-century European portraiture and of great appeal to both collectors and decorative spaces.
