Hélène Planquelle is a self-taught contemporary figurative painter whose works explore the delicate balance between pleasure and suffering in our relationship to others, from both an individual and collective perspective, through recurring themes such as emotional dependence, attachment, vulnerability, acceptance and rejection, violence and power dynamics.
Although figurative, her work is conceptual by nature, drawing on a rich soil of philosophical, literary and scientific references, in fields ranging from ethics to the social sciences, including attachment theories and evolutionary psychology.
The title of each series, most often a quotation (literary, poetic or philosophical), creates an echoing dialogue between each work, thereby widening the field of possible interpretations for the viewer.
