Ancient Roman, Empire Bronze Figure - 7 cm
Roman Bronze Statuette of Hermes, Roman Empire, 1st–3rd Century AD
A finely cast Roman bronze statuette depicting Hermes, the messenger god of the Roman pantheon, shown standing nude in a relaxed contrapposto pose and identifiable by the remnants of his winged attributes and the characteristic symbolism associated with travel, commerce, communication, and good fortune. Small bronzes of Hermes were popular throughout the Roman Empire and were placed in domestic shrines, villas, and commercial spaces as protective and auspicious figures. The sculpture displays pleasing classical proportions, well-defined anatomical modelling, and an attractive ancient green-brown patina that enhances its archaeological character, making it an appealing example of Roman devotional and decorative bronze work.
Material: Bronze
Dimensions: 7 cm height
Provenance: Acquired in the Netherlands. Formerly in a Belgian private collection assembled during the 2000s.
