Description from the seller
Triumph TR4 A IRS Roadster 1966
• Engine and gearbox revised
• Only 2,852 miles driven after engine and gearbox revision
• Damage-free and rust-free
• In the possession of the last owner for over 30 years
• Desired IRS version with independent suspension
• Beautiful color combination
HISTORY:
The Triumph TR4: a popular roadster as it should be: light, agile and a joy to drive. Combined with a stunning Italian design. Italian design on an English car, you might ask? Indeed: the design came from the hand of Michelotti, who provided legendary designs for several coachbuilders and brands such as Ferrari and Maserati.
The car was built in 1966 and newly delivered in the United States, where the climate is favorable. The last American owner had the Triumph in ownership in Monterey, California. In 1994 the car was imported to the Netherlands, after which the car has always been in the ownership of one and the same owner.
A lot of documentation comes with the car, including export documents, an original 'Owners Handbook', the latest MOT form from 2021 (afterwards MOT was not mandatory due to the car's age). In addition, a thick stack of beautiful books is present, including a parts catalog and workshop manual.
EXTERIOR:
A sight to behold, especially this example offered by us in a beautiful color combination: British Racing Green (color code 75) with a beige leather interior. The paintwork was sprayed in the 1990s and is therefore not in perfect condition. Logically the car shows signs of use, but the body has not been welded and this is a damage-free and a very hard car.
The chrome work and lighting are in fresh condition. The rubbers show signs of use. The black soft top is in good condition without cracks. See our extensive photo report for a good impression, including underside photos of the car.
INTERIOR:
The interior is still in a neat condition with only minimal signs of use. The beige leather is free of cracks. The large, almost vertically mounted steering wheel and elegant large gauges make the interior a pleasant place. The dash is beautifully finished with wood. The seats are adjustable. The interior also features optional heating. The trunk space is neat and accommodates the spare wheel, a wheel brace and a jack.
TECHNICAL:
Only 2,852 miles (4,590 km) the engine and the gearbox have been revised. The underside of the car is very solid and has withstood the test of time very well. At the rear are adjustable 'Spax' telescopic shock absorbers installed. At the front are 'KONI Classic' shock absorbers installed. Also new rubbers. The car starts, shifts, brakes and drives very well and is ready for the next owner.
GENERAL:
The TR4 is a sports car produced from 1961 to 1965 and is the successor to the TR3. Under the skin the first series of the TR4 is largely the same as the TR4, but thanks to a longer wheelbase the TR4 has more space. The larger doors provide space for downward-opening side windows, in contrast to the TR3. Especially visually the TR4 is different from the TR3: a robust and large grille and clean lines. Characteristic is the bump on the hood, which houses the two carburetors. The TR4 was designed by the Italian designer Michelotti, his contribution ensured a wonderfully beautiful design, by many regarded as the finest of the entire Triumph TR series.
Because of the importance attached to the American market relatively few units were sold in Europe. The 4-cylinder engine is enlarged to 2138 cc. Thanks to the sporty driving characteristics, a number of TR4's were used by the English police at the time. The TR4 was succeeded in 1965 by the TR4 A IRS, where IRS stands for Independent Rear Suspension. This independent rear suspension provides more ride comfort and better handling, which today makes it a desirable version.
Furthermore the sober metal TR4 dashboard was equipped with a refined wooden panel and the handbrake operation moved to the transmission tunnel between the seats. Because the TR4 A IRS was produced only until 1967, the production number is relatively low at 28,468 units. Precise steering, outstanding road holding thanks to the well-balanced chassis, sportiness and suppleness make the TR4 a sporty and desirable tour car.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
