Description from the seller
GERMANY. Munich. 2 Mark. 1876. Ludwig II of Bavaria (1864-1886)
- Denomination: 2 Mark.
- Reign: Ludwig II of Bavaria (1864-1886).
- Year: 1876.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: LUDWIG II KOENIG V. BAYERN. Reverse: DEUTSCHES REICH · ZWEI MARK · 1876, with the crowned German imperial eagle.
- Grading: Excellent, well preserved.
Two-mark silver coin minted at the Munich mint (mint mark D) for the Kingdom of Bavaria within the monetary system of the German Empire. The obverse features the portrait of Ludwig II of Bavaria looking to the right, rendered with great detail and elegance, reflecting the neoclassical style characteristic of the issues of the German states during the period of the German Empire. The reverse shows the crowned German Imperial Eagle with a central shield, a symbol of the political unity achieved after the unification of 1871, accompanied by the denomination ZWEI MARK and the date. Struck in .900 fine silver, weighing 10.94 grams, with a mintage of 5,370,000 pieces, this coin retains well-defined reliefs in the hair, facial features, and the eagle’s plumage, showing moderate wear typical of an XF-grade specimen. The fields preserve an attractive silvery tone with a light antique patina. This is a representative issue of Ludwig II’s reign, the famous “King of the Castles,” one of the most emblematic figures in Bavarian history of the 19th century.
