Description from the seller
They are a pair of candelabra that embody that moment when Neoclassicism was already firmly established, yet still allowed some Rococo gestures to peek through, as if the 18th century resisted disappearing altogether. The structure is bold, vertical, with a shaft rising confidently from a square base, but the surface is alive: the mythological reliefs — faces, masks, fantastic foliage — seem to emerge from the metal as small frozen scenes.
The gilding in ormolu (that finely chiseled bronze gilded with mercury) gives them a luminous, almost theatrical presence. It is not a flat shine, but one that plays with the reliefs’ depth: the raised areas catch the light with a warm flash, while the recesses darken and create a chiaroscuro very characteristic of pieces from the early 19th century.
The vegetal decoration, the scrolls, and the fantastical motifs recall late Rococo, but the overall composition — symmetry, verticality, the geometric base — already belongs to the Neoclassical taste. That mix is precisely what makes them so attractive: transitional objects, where the decorative exuberance is disciplined without losing its charm.
Certified shipping and good packaging.
