Brass and glass barometer with a thermometer by August Schatz & Söhne, Royal Mariner Ø180, circa 1980–1990, in excellent, working condition, 18 cm diameter, 9.5 cm deep, weight 1056 g, origin Denmark.
Description from the seller
Vintage barometer from the Schatz brand, model Royal Mariner Ø180 Barometer - late 20th century - original price over €400.
The classic Schatz barometer from the Royal Mariner series features a gleaming brass housing with a glass plate and a handsome open dial.
This distinctive nautical instrument consists of a barometer and a thermometer made of high-quality brass. The barometer and thermometer have a porthole-style front for easy access to the internals and are weatherproof, so you can also use the instrument outdoors.
Your Schatz barometer is calibrated to sea level before leaving the factory. If the location where you use the barometer is above sea level, you will need to calibrate it yourself.
To calibrate your barometer correctly, compare the reading with that of a correctly calibrated barometer in your region. You can also consult the weather forecast in your local area. There you will find the current atmospheric pressure for your region.
To calibrate your barometer, proceed as follows:
Open the small rear access plate to reveal the adjustment screw. Turn this screw clockwise until the barometer needle indicates the desired value.
Before reading the barometer, tap it gently to ensure the needle moves freely. Then align the dial so that it covers the black hand over the glass.
The next time you read the barometer, you can see whether it has risen or fallen. Generally, a rising barometer (the black hand moves clockwise) indicates good weather, while a falling barometer (the black hand moves counterclockwise) indicates bad weather. If the barometer falls rapidly, you can expect stormy weather within a few hours. If the barometer rises rapidly – 10–20 millibars in a few hours – unstable weather and often strong winds are to be expected. A steadily falling or rising barometer indicates good or bad weather for about 12 to 24 hours ahead. An unchanged barometer reading suggests the weather will remain stable.
This large barometer is equipped with a thermometer in the lower part of the scale. It shows temperature in Celsius above and Fahrenheit below the thermometer glass.
Dimensions: Ø 18 cm x D 9.5 cm
Weight: 1056 grams
This item has been functionally tested and is in good preserved pre-owned condition with minimal patina from age and use. It will be securely packaged with smart shipping, sent via registered and insured shipping with tracking and tracing.
