Biography of Hoang Anh.
Born in 1984 in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam, lives and works in Hanoi
Originally from Thanh Hoa province, located 150 km south of Hanoi, Hoang Anh belongs to this pivotal generation of Vietnamese artists (the 8x generation) who combine cultural heritage with contemporary abstraction. A graduate of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, he made his mark on Hanoi’s art scene with a bold approach to matter and color.
Graduate of the Artistic Talent program (class of 13) at the Thanh Hoa College of Culture and Arts
Graduate of the Painting Department (class of 48) at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts
Style and Artistic Approach
Hoang Anh’s work is distinguished by an intense exploration of texture and movement. While he explores varied themes such as landscapes, nature, and the female figure, it is in abstraction that he reveals his full expressive power:
• The energy of gesture: A proponent of oil and acrylic painting, he frequently uses a palette knife to apply color in vigorous horizontal strokes. This gesture creates a nearly musical rhythm on the canvas.
• Chromatic contrasts: His work plays on the opposition between often neutral backgrounds (urban grays, textured whites) and flashes of primary colors — ardent reds, solar yellows, and deep blues — that seem to burst from the surface.
• Lyric abstraction: His compositions do not seek to reproduce reality, but to capture its emotional essence. His canvases often evoke ephemeral phenomena: the reflection of light on water, the vibration of heat, or the bustle of a metropolis in full transformation.
Exhibitions and Recognition
An active and recognized artist, Hoang Anh regularly exhibits in Hanoi’s prestigious galleries and within national artistic collectives. His works are part of numerous private collections, both in Vietnam and internationally, charming with their ability to translate an Eastern sensibility into a universal, modern language.
"To me, painting is a breath, a way of fixing the invisible energy that surrounds us." — Hoang Anh
