Folding four-panel polyptych (складень / skladén’) in cast brass, consisting of four hinged panels, a typical travel icon of 19th-century Russian Orthodoxy.
Folding four-panel polyptychs were among the most popular forms of travel icons and were colloquially called утюг (utiug), meaning “iron,” due to their shape and weight when closed.
Each of the four panels features a lunette top in the Russian-Byzantine style (kokoshnik), with filigreed decorations. The panels are connected by solid, functioning hinges. The high-relief sacred scenes are arranged in four compartments per panel, for a total of about sixteen narrative scenes, presumably depicting the Twelve Great Feasts (Dodekaorton) of the Orthodox Church, saints, and scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin.
The work is crafted in ornamental relief in brass with polychrome enamel decorations. There are enamel inserts visible in blue/turquoise hues, which give color vitality to the compositions.
The inscriptions in Cyrillic characters, legible in the cartouches between the panels, identify the individual scenes depicted.
The enamels are in excellent condition.
