Description from the seller
Organic-design industrial table lamp – aluminum and patinated metal – ca. 1930–1940
Elegant and uncommon desk lamp with a marked industrial character, made with a combination of formed aluminum and patinated metal. The piece stands out for the harmony between its functional forms and a surprisingly organic aesthetic that clearly differentiates it from conventional industrial lamps of its era.
The shade is made of repujado or stamped aluminum, with an attractive design of concentric ribs that act as a reflector, amplifying light diffusion and creating a pleasant warm illumination. Its flared profile recalls certain mid-20th-century aerodynamic designs, where functionality and aesthetics walked hand in hand.
However, the most singular element of this lamp is its extraordinary curved arm. Formed by a succession of cylindrical segments joined together, it clearly evokes the natural structure of a bamboo reed. This similarity brings an unexpected organic sensation to a piece essentially industrial, creating an interesting dialogue between nature and mechanics. The gentle curvature of the arm further reinforces this impression, giving the lamp a sculptural and highly decorative presence.
Determining the exact material of the arm is difficult without direct physical examination. The very weak reaction to a strong magnet suggests that it could be a non-ferrous alloy or a metal with low iron content, possibly aluminum, zinc alloy (zamak), nickel-plated brass, or stainless steel of certain compositions. In any case, it presents an attractive aged patina consistent with its age.
The solid annular base provides visual and structural stability, completing a balanced and elegant ensemble.
Era
Probably between the 1930s and 1940s.
Style
Industrial
Functionalist design
Late Machine Age
European industrial Modernism
Biomorphic organic influences
Materials
Reflective aluminum shade.
Segmented metal arm of unidentified alloy.
Machined and patinated metal base.
Functional electrical installation.
Condition
The lamp is in very good overall condition for a piece over half a century old.
Perfect functioning.
Operating switch.
Shade without significant deformations.
Solid and stable arm.
Preserves the original patina of the time.
Shows light surface wear, small marks and signs of use appropriate to its age and compatible with careful conservation.
No visible repairs or alterations that compromise its authenticity.
Aesthetic appearance
This is a piece with a very strong personality. The contrast between the technical aluminum shade and the almost vegetal-looking arm, resembling an articulated bamboo stalk, makes this lamp a visually striking object. When lit, the interior ribs of the reflector take on an attractive golden tone that further enhances its presence.
Conservation status
Very good overall conservation for its age.
Normal signs of use and the passage of time are present, such as light surface marks, small worn areas, and a homogeneous patina typical of an authentic period piece. These details do not detract from its presentation; on the contrary, they reinforce its authenticity and historical appeal.
The shade retains excellent geometry, with no significant deformations. The arm maintains all its structural firmness and the base remains solid and stable. No damage observed that would affect its functionality.
