Description from the seller
Rare Victorian Gentleman’s Campaign Dressing & Writing Stand – Mahogany – Brass strips. England c.1840-1860
An exceptional and highly decorative Victorian gentleman’s dressing and writing stand, crafted in beautifully figured mahogany and dating from approximately 1840–1870.
This remarkable piece combines several functions in one compact and elegant design. With the lid closed, the green leather writing surface forms a practical writing desk. When opened, the stand reveals a dressing and washing area complete with mirror, basin compartment and bottle holders.
The spectacular flame mahogany veneer throughout the cabinet creates a striking visual effect rarely encountered on comparable pieces.
Its compact dimensions and relatively light weight suggest that this may have been intended as a travelling or campaign piece for a gentleman, officer, administrator or colonial traveller.
