Description from the seller
Antique Russian icon 'Christ Pantocrator' with a brass oklad from the 19th century (circa 1880). Hand-painted with egg tempera on a wooden panel with chalk ground.
Typical method of icon painting in 18th- and 19th-century Russia.
The subject is widespread and very popular in the Orthodox Church.
This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is quite masterful and detailed. Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic craquelure (see photos). Under the oklad the icon is not fully painted. Only the face and hands of the saint were painted by hand.
Minimal partial restorations are present (see photos).
Especially expressive and striking is the face of the Saint (see photos). The Saint is labeled. The inscriptions are legible.
On the back, both cross staples are missing. Stable and solid wooden panel. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of use (see photos).
An icon for collectors and connoisseurs of the subject.
All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are part of the description.
Dimensions: 31 x 26.5 x 2.7 cm
