Description from the seller

Altar figure
Ghana
Ewe culture
Wood
H.29cm

Beautiful Ewe altar statuette from Togo. It is an object with a special presence. The treatment is naïve and minimalist, plunging this work into a particular dreamlike universe. The face is expressive and captivating. The gaze is illuminated. It seems to be immersed in the world of spirits and deities. There is a lot of gentleness in this work. On its head is fixed a plate where offerings were placed. The arms are missing. The sculpture is well proportioned, the curves are soft and harmonious. It is the work of a seasoned artist. The wood has suffered the ravages of time; it is eroded and patinated. It is covered with kaolin powder and remnants of offerings. Cracks and blemishes, see photos, sold as is. Custom-made base. A beautiful old and authentic Voodoo collection piece. Circa 1950.

Provenance :
- German collection, acquired in Togo around 1980.
