Description from the seller
A living territory, still in the process of inventing itself. A painting where shapes, beings and memories seem to appear, transform and disappear before our eyes.
At first glance, Ralf Altrieth's painting seems to burst forth in a free, instinctive surge. Then the gaze lingers—and gradually uncovers a more complex world, threaded with shifting forms, unforeseen encounters and surprising balances. Nothing is fixed. The work continually evolves with distance, light, and the time spent before it.
In this universe, the boundary between abstraction and figuration remains deliberately unstable. Possible silhouettes surface, depths are suggested, never fixed. The gaze is invited, set in motion. Seeing becomes an active, almost physical experience.
But beyond their immediate energy, Ralf Altrieth’s works permanently establish themselves in space. They settle in through their density. Through their presence. And through that rare ability to transform the space in which they take place.

CRITIQUE AND PRESS:
"In this sense, Ralf Altrieth’s pictorial poems are a pure childish song. From the crucible of improvisation he conjures a world untouched by joy and spontaneity and strong impulses."
— Dr. Friedhelm Häring, art historian and museum director
"His writing by gesture and color describes a world open to new voices and to experiences never attempted. His canvases and works on paper demonstrate that painting remains a major expression on the contemporary scene."
— Laurent Puech, art historian and curator
