Description from the seller
Short sword "mambeli" Boa/Zande
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Period: early 20th century
Total height: 55 cm
Materials: wrought iron, wood, wire
Provenance: private Belgian collection
Besides its function as a bladed weapon, the "mambeli", a short sword, was a symbol of prestige and also served as a form of exchange currency. Most were worn at the belt without a sheath; examples with a sheath are rare. Although their dimensions vary considerably (from 20 to 90 cm), the hilt size remains relatively small.
The short sword "mambeli" was produced in large quantities by the Boa (Ababua, Bobwa), the Angba (including the Mongelima) and the Hanga. It was also found among many neighboring populations, notably the Bandia, the Zande, the Mangbetu, the Nzakara, the Barambo, the Mba, the Ndaaka, the Bati, the Binja and the Bengé. Its popularity and wide diffusion gave rise to countless local variants designed by the neighboring peoples.
