A highly collectible and increasingly difficult-to-find Seiko Minicon MCJ-502 automotive dashboard clock, manufactured in Japan during the golden age of Space Age industrial design.
Part of Seiko's prestigious MCJ automobile clock series (MCJ-501, MCJ-502 and MCEJ-503), this model was specifically designed for installation on vehicle dashboards and was advertised by Seiko as a high-performance transistor clock capable of withstanding the vibrations and temperature variations encountered during daily driving.
Unlike conventional dashboard clocks of the period, the MCJ-502 features a distinctive sculptural capsule-shaped case with a strongly futuristic appearance. Its compact dimensions, very dark grey, recessed dial and prominent front adjustment knob create an aesthetic that perfectly reflects the optimism and technological ambition of late-1960s Japanese design.
The clock is powered by Seiko's renowned Minicon transistor movement, representing an important transitional technology between traditional mechanical clocks and the quartz revolution that would soon transform timekeeping worldwide. According to the original Seiko catalogue, the clock operates from a single AA battery and offers an autonomy of over one year.
