Description from the seller
French Silver Chatelaine Box (1822–1838) – Gilt Interior – Pommade / Pill Box
A charming and authentic French silver chatelaine box dating to the period 1822–1838, as indicated by the crayfish hallmark in an oval cartouche.
This small and finely crafted box was designed to be worn on a chatelaine, as evidenced by the attached suspension ring. Pieces of this type were commonly used to hold pomade, balm, solid perfume, or small personal items such as pills or snuff.
The interior is gilt (vermeil), a practical feature protecting the silver from contact with ointments or cosmetic substances. The exterior is beautifully decorated with finely engraved floral and scrolling motifs, typical of early 19th-century French silverwork.
The piece also bears additional marks, likely related to French colonial silver control, adding historical interest.
Condition:
Good antique condition with light wear and minor dents. The gilt interior shows some wear consistent with age.
Dimensions:
Height: approx. 2 cm
Diameter: approx. 4.5 cm
Weight: approx. 13 grams
A refined and collectible example of a 19th-century French silver chatelaine box, combining functionality with elegant craftsmanship.
