A prestigious Daum Nancy multistratified glass salt cellar in a circular form from circa 1910, belonging to the iconic “Winter Landscape” series, with a yellow ground, grisaille forest decoration, and a satin finish, signed with the Lorraine Cross under the base and measuring 5 cm wide by 5 cm deep and 3 cm high, in good condition with minor enamel losses.
Description from the seller
Very precious salt cellar (or salt holder) of circular shape in multi-layer artistic glass, a miniature masterpiece from the Daum Nancy factory, dating to around 1910.
This piece belongs to the iconic "Winter Landscape" series, reproduced here with extraordinary meticulousness at a height of only 3 cm.
Despite the "mignon" size, the execution quality is identical to the museum vases of the same series:
- Multilayer glass with "Vitrifications": The body features a deep saffron yellow background (twilight sky) enriched by hot inclusions of white and grayish vitreous powders that imitate snow on the ground.
- Grisaille enamel decoration: A dense forest of bare trees is hand-painted with black and brown enamels along the entire circumference. The precision of the stroke, despite the small size, is astonishing.
- Frosted finish: The surface is acid-etched to achieve a satin (mat) effect that evokes winter frost.
- Author: Daum Nancy (signed with the Lorraine Cross, meticulously painted in black enamel under the base).
- Era: Circa 1910.
- Condition: Good. Glass intact, without chips or signs of wear. The enamel shows some losses consistent with age.
"Miniature items for everyday use" like this salt cellar are among the most sought-after pieces at international auctions. Often part of prestigious dining sets of the era, these small objects are today considered jewels of art glass and represent a safe investment.
