Description from the seller
EGYPT. 5 Qirsh. 1327/3 (1909). Abdul Hamid II (1876-1909)
- Value: 5 Qirsh.
- Reign: Abdul Hamid II (1876-1909).
- Year: 1327/3 (1909).
- Inscriptions: Obverse: an Arabic legend with the value “٥ قروش” inside a vegetal crown and stars at the top, date at the bottom. Reverse: the tughra of Sultan Abdul Hamid II with floral inscription, stars above and crossed cannons at the bottom.
- Grade: MS61 (NGC).
Gold? No, silver coin of 5 Qirsh from the Ottoman period in Egypt, with an obverse of elegant calligraphic composition where the value is integrated into a classical-style vegetal frame. The reverse presents the imperial tughra, complex and stylized, characteristic of Ottoman art, accompanied by military and decorative elements such as crossed cannons and garlands. The specimen shows a high level of preservation, with slight wear on the highest points and fields that retain part of the original luster, along with a homogeneous gray patina. This piece reflects Ottoman sovereignty over Egypt at the beginning of the 20th century, in a final stage of imperial rule before the major political changes in the region.
