Description from the seller
This is a beautiful solid silver Victorian little box, known as a "pill box" or "snuff box" (tobaccan? snuff box), produced in England.
Reading the symbols from left to right in the photo of the bottom:
• C.G & Co: It’s the maker’s mark, Charles Green & Co, a renowned Birmingham silversmith firm specialized in small luxury items and jewelry.
• Profile of Queen (Duty Mark): It is the head of Queen Victoria. This mark (called the "Duty Mark") indicates that duty had been paid to the Crown and narrows the dating to before 1890.
• Anchor: It is the mark of the Birmingham Assay Office, the main center for the working of English silver of this kind.
• Lion Passant: It is the most important hallmark. It guarantees that the item is Sterling Silver (925/1000), the British standard of purity.
• The letter "u" (lowercase): It is the year letter. In combination with the shield and the other marks, it identifies the exact year of production: 1870.
It’s a classic example of Victorian style, characterized by rich repoussé decorations with floral motifs and scrolls.
• The Central Cartouche: On the lid there is a smooth rectangular space (cartouche). At the time it was left blank to allow the purchaser to have their initials or a date engraved.
