Tanzanite is a blue to violet variety of the mineral Zoisite. It is used exclusively as a gemstone, like the pink variety thulite.

Like Zoisite, Tanzanite crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically forms transparent, prismatic to columnar crystals that can reach several centimeters in length and exhibit a glassy luster on their surfaces. Cleavage faces, by contrast, shimmer more pearly.
