Description from the seller
This little work is based on the series The Four Seasons by the Brussels painter David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690). Around 1644 he made a painting of the old man cloaked in velvet and fur who leans forward to warm his hands at a fire bowl. His face is furrowed and wrinkled but his hat with fur wings gives the impression of speed and strength, like a winter wind.
About the artist:
This 19th-century piece can be attributed to the French artist and illustrator Eugène Auger (1847-1922), who is mainly known for his architectural drawings and book illustrations. As the son of a lampmaker and tinsmith, he initially studied in Reims. He completed his training in Paris and in 1881 took over the family business. After his retirement Auger withdrew to Trigny, where he could devote himself to his passion for drawing and painting. He undertook commissions for a number of local publications, including a Répertoire Archéologique of the city of Reims. His best-known paintings were made on commission for Hugues Krafft for the Musée Le Vergeur.
Conditieverslag: This painting and the accompanying frame are in good condition and show no visible signs of damage.
