Songye wooden mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire.
Dimension : 44 cm
This type of mask, called Kifwébé, was worn by members of the secret society Bwadi.
These masks depict a face covered with linear scarifications and feature a rectangular mouth, an elongated nose, and globular eyes.
It can be masculine, with a central crest, or feminine if the hairstyle is smooth.
The size of the crest indicates the bearer’s power.
The female mask bearer exhibited soft, controlled movements aimed at improving women’s fertility.
The male mask bearer had an aggressive and unpredictable demeanor, intended to encourage social conformity.
These masks were used during initiation ceremonies, circumcisions, and funerals.
