Description from the seller
Italian late 17th-century school, Annunciation, oil on canvas, 49.3 x 58.8 cm approximately.
The subject describes the biblical episode in keeping with the classical iconography: the Archangel Gabriel perched on a cloud bearing the announcement, and a stem with three blooming lilies, a tribute to the Virgin’s purity and a reminder of the Trinity. Mary is kneeling and holds her chest as a sign of acceptance and humility; the Holy Spirit, represented by a dove, descends upon her, symbolizing the divine incarnation. The setting, in the background, is only suggested in an interior—the house of Mary—so as not to interfere with the foreground figures and the unfolding of the scene.
In good overall condition: some craquelure is to be expected given the painting’s era, nothing particularly notable; on the Wood lamp there are minute repaintings and no conservation issues are evident. A fine craquelure is visible, related to the indicated period. On a second canvas with the frame replaced at the time of re-stretching, of more recent vintage. The photographs are an integral part of the description.
The frame measuring 63.2 x 72.8 x 5 cm does not affect the artwork’s valuation and is to be considered included as a courtesy. By its function and the very nature of the materials involved, any damages during shipping cannot be ruled out and will not be a valid basis for a complaint or order cancellation. Maximum care will be taken for precise packaging, with trackable shipping.
For some destinations, shipping costs and times may be higher than the basic indications due to locations less accessible to shipping services. I will arrange for personalized quotes based on the destination ZIP code and will make it my responsibility to relay them to the buyer so they can share them, or, alternatively, withdraw from the purchase.
