Peridot, also called chrysolite, is a particularly pure variety of the mineral olivine. The light-green, transparent mineral is used as a gemstone.

Peridot is the magnesium-rich variety of olivine (forsterite) with a composition approaching Mg2SiO4. Its crystals are orthorhombic, and its hardness is slightly lower than that of quartz.

Peridot is of a light-green color with a range from yellow-green to olive-green. There are also brownish varieties known. Peridot is sometimes mistaken for emerald and other green gemstones, such as chrysoberyl, diopside, moldavite as well as garnet (demantoid), quartz (prasiolite, prasem) and tourmaline varieties (chromolith, verdelite).

Already in the Old Testament Peridot (called pitdah) is mentioned, and in ancient Rome the stone was valued as a “evening emerald” because it can be slightly illuminated by lamp light. In the Middle Ages Peridot was often part of church adornments; presumably Peridot stones were brought to Europe by Crusaders. The stone has been attributed healing powers, as well as the power to ward off evil spirits.
