Description from the seller
Origin. Angola
Tribe name. Chokwe
Material. Wood
Dimension. 35 cm
Shipping method. Colissimo within 24-48h, open.
This decorative statuette is a remarkable example of the art of the Chokwe (or Tshokwe) people, a group spread across Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia.
It is a male representation, probably of a chief or heroic ancestor, often associated with the legendary figure of Chibinda Ilunga. He was the foreign hunter prince who founded the Lunda-Chokwe dynasty, bringing with him a new political structure and advanced hunting techniques.
The Headdress (Mwana Nganga): The most striking element is the monumental headdress with wide lateral wing-like extensions. It symbolizes high social rank and political power. The top is finely chiseled with geometric motifs reminiscent of fiber weaving.
The Face: The classic Chokwe canons are present: large almond-shaped eyes (often described as "coffee beans"), a broad nose, and a full mouth. The expression is at once focused and serene.
The Posture and the Attributes:
The figure stands, legs slightly flexed, giving an impression of vitality.
He holds in his hands staffs or scepters of power, reinforcing his authority.
The musculature is understated, emphasizing the quiet strength of the chief.
Wood: The sculpture is carved from dense wood.
