Description from the seller
Origin. Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Tribe name. Luluwa
Material. Wood
Dimension. 26 cm
Shipping method. Colissimo within 24-48h. open.
This decorative mask presents the major stylistic characteristics of the art of the Lulua (or Luluwa) ethnic group, a Central African people located mainly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in the Kasai region.
1. General shape and structure
Silhouette: The mask displays an overall oval shape that extends downward to end in a distinctly pointed chin, a recurring feature among the Lulua.
The forehead: It is high, wide, smooth and slightly domed, occupying a dominant place on the face.
The nasal bridge: A long, straight, and highly geometric nose divides the face vertically in a sharp manner. It extends from the top of the forehead to above the mouth, forming a true central column.
2. Facial features
The eyes: They are represented by horizontal incised slits within sunken rectangular forms in negative relief in the wood. This linear, folded gaze gives the mask an expression of interiority, concentration, or serenity.
The mouth: It is sculpted in pronounced relief, forming two thick horizontal lips projecting forward (prognathism). Its darker color contrasts with the rest of the face.
The ears: Small semi-circular or rectangular protuberances protrude from each side of the mask at the level of the eye line.
