Description from the seller
Switzerland (Bern) – Halbtaler 1835
An exceptional and highly sought-after silver Halbtaler struck in 1835 for the Canton of Bern (catalogued as HMZ 2-232a). This magnificent specimen represents the pinnacle of late-classical Swiss cantonal coinage, minted shortly before the unification of the Swiss monetary system.
Obverse: Features the iconic crowned coat of arms of Bern, depicting a sharply defined, walking bear facing left within a heater shield. Encircled by the crisp legend: RESPUBLICA BERNENSIS.
Reverse: Depicts a beautifully detailed standing Swiss soldier in period military uniform, holding a broadsword. Encircled by the Latin motto: DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT (The Lord Will Provide), with the date 1835 positioned cleanly in the exergue.
Condition & Preservation
Grade: FDC / Mint State
Surfaces: This piece boasts an exceptional state of preservation, characterized by full, radiant original mint luster underneath a highly attractive, authentic peripheral toning (magnificent patina).
Details: The strike is remarkably sharp and well-centered for this issue. Every detail—from the texture of the bear's fur on the obverse to the intricate uniform lines, facial features, and weaponry of the soldier on the reverse—remains perfectly defined and crisp.
