Original Chinese export fan from the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911), 22 cm high by 41 cm wide, in good condition and featuring gouache-painted scenes with bone inlays and fabric appliqués.
Description from the seller
Splendid and refined antique Chinese export fan, popularly known as the “Thousand Faces” fan (or Mandarin), dating to the second half of the 19th century (Qing Dynasty).
This piece stands out for its evening-format, particularly elegant and compact size (22 x 41 cm), a dimension that required even more microscopic and meticulous craftsmanship in rendering the details than larger formats.
The double-element paper sheet is entirely painted in gouache with vivid, bright colors, and depicts lively scenes of court life and daily life within the gardens of an imperial palace.
Exceptional feature of this lot: all the faces of the numerous characters are created with tiny bone plaques finely hand-painted and individually applied to the paper. Similarly, the robes of the dignitaries and ladies are made from real and precious fragments of silk fabric applied, giving a wonderful three-dimensional and tactile effect to the work.
The lower sticks are made of glossy black lacquered wood, shaped and connected to the base by an original metal rivet that is perfectly secure and functional.
A collectible piece with great visual impact, ideal to be displayed in a display case or glass-front frame, perfect for enriching a high-level Asian art collection.
