Description from the seller
Origin. Côte d'Ivoire
Tribe name. Baoulé
Material. Wood
Dimension. H 42. L 22 cm
Mode of shipping. Colissimo within 24-48h. Open.
This artwork is a magnificent example of an Mblo decorative mask, stemming from the rich artistic tradition of the Baoulé in Côte d'Ivoire.
Unlike many other masks from West Africa that represent spiritual entities or mythical ancestors, Mblo masks are portraits. They are intended to honor a specific and respected individual in the community, or to embody an ideal of beauty and wisdom.
The face exudes a sense of deep calm. Almond-shaped, half-closed eyes are a signature of Baoulé aesthetics; they symbolize restraint, wisdom, reserve, and inner intelligence.
Elaborate Hairstyle: The top of the mask is crowned with a complex coiffure, adorned with a carved figure (resembling here a bird or a stylized zoomorphic motif). This addition testifies to great artisanal mastery and underscores the social status or importance of the person depicted.
Scarifications: The finely chiselled details on the temples and cheeks represent traditional scarifications. These motifs add to the realism of the portrait and reinforce the sophisticated character of the object.
Cultural Significance
In Baoulé society, Mblo masks are not secret sacred objects. They are used during public dance performances and entertainment, also called Mblo. During these events, the dancer wears the mask and imitates the gestures or character of the person represented, thus allowing the community to celebrate the moral and social qualities of that individual.
These masks are regarded as one of the most refined expressions of African sculpted art due to their humanism, their perfect symmetry, and the meticulous attention paid to detail.
